Product Description Grief. Hope. Love. Sword fights. And the crisp glory of fried okra. Ex-cocktail waitress and "convenience story professional" Eudora "Pea" O'Brien is filled with grief and regret, low on cash and all alone. Headed down the hot, dusty back roads of central Texas, Pea is convinced she'll find a sign leading her to the reincarnated soul of the sister who raised her. A sign that she's found her place in the world of the living again. At least that's what the psychic promised. In an unforgettably funny and poignant journey, Pea collects an unlikely family of strays-a starving kitten, a pregnant teenager, a sexy con man trying to go straight, and a ferocious gun dealer named Glory, who introduces Pea to the amazing, sword-wielding warrior goddesses of Texas author Robert E. Howard-creator of the Conan the Barbarian novels-and celebrated in festival every year. Six foot tall, red-headed Pea looks good with a sword in her hand. Glory, the goddesses, and a grandmotherly café owner become Pea's unlikely gurus as she struggles to learn swordplay and the art of perfect fried okra. She'll have to master both if she's going to find what matters most-her own lost soul. "Jean Brashear writes with warmth and emotion truth. The depth of her understanding of human nature marks her as a writer to watch, a writer to read and a writer to enjoy." --Debbie Macomber, #1 NY Times Bestselling Author "THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA is a fabulous read. Riveting. Original. Those characters grabbed my imagination and didn't let go." --Cathy Maxwell, NY Times Bestselling Author

It is just ok. September 4, 2010 Asia It was just ok. I started the book liking the main character, but losing that feeling fairly soon into the story. It was corny, predictable and didn't flow smoothly. Having said that I finished it - usually once I lose interest in a book I put it down.
Fun Ride September 3, 2010 Jude24 This was a good read. There are many comments here about it being a "womans" or a "chick" book, but this man liked it. OK maybe not Anne Tyler good, but a pretty good character study. Just enough twists and turns to keep my attention, but not unbelievably crazy. Looking for some fun without getting too deep? Put your dawgs up, set a spell, and enjoy! I'm hungry for some good old country cooking.
Great Read September 1, 2010 J. Bell (New Creek, wv USA) I love stories with quirky characters. This book fit the bill. Enjoyed many evenings on my deck with Pea and company!
Not my usual fare, and glad I read it anyway September 1, 2010 A. Scott _The Goddess of Fried Okra_ is not a book toward which I would usually gravitate. However, I found myself quickly drawn into the story. The characters are all strays in one sense or another. They were all endearing, and it was a pleasure to watch them come grips with old wounds and fears to the point where they could move on with their lives. I thorougly enjoyed reading it and saved off many favorite passages, mostly about raising teenagers and cats.
I will definitely be looking into other books by this author.
Oh Brother... September 1, 2010 Noneya (Bury st. Edmunds, uk) A lame storyline. Contrived and melodramatic. None of the characters rang true. Even the names of most of the characters stereotypical.
